General Notes: R. Paul Fahringer, 81, of 2109 Heights Road, Berwick, died at 11 A.M. Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at his home after an illness. Born June 19, 1916, in Berwick, he was a son of the late Harry and Nellie Lee Kile Fahringer. He graduated from Berwick High School in 1934. Fahringer retired in 1983 as President of Fahringer, Inc., Berwick, a business started by his grandfather. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Berwick, where he sang in the choir, served as church treasurer and held other offices in the church. Fahringer had been a member of the Berwick Golf Club since 1938. He served as club president in 1971 and was club champion in 1953 and 1964 and club senior champion in 1971. He was chairman of the greens committee and served on other club committees. Fahringer was an AGA board member from 1965 to 1996. He was North Central Golf Association president in 1950. He was a member of the Berwick Rotary Club for 12 years. He enjoyed gardening, singing and traveling. A brother, Lee Fahringer, died previously; Nancy Heller, on Feb. 17, 1973; and Thomas L. Fahringer on De. 10, 1988. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Helen R. Hunchar; three daughters: Anita Fahringer, Philadelphia; Mrs. Harold (Jane) Keefer, Berwick; and Mrs. Philip (Barbara) Jacobus, New York City; a granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Woodrow (Jane) Brewington, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla; and three brothers; Russell Fahringer, St. Augustine, Fla; George Fahringer, Gastonia, NC; and David Fahringer, Apollo. General Notes: Russel Fahringer, 92, a resident of St. Augustine, Fla., for 26 years, formerly of Berwick, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001. Fahringer studied commercial art at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in the 1920s. Fahringer then traveled the midwest throughout the 1930s, painting murals and illustrating historical maps. Fahringer was a combat engineer during World War II, serving in the European Theater, where he moved with allied forces from North Africa to Italy, and into Europe, leading a unit with the task of clearing the beach of obstacles the morning of the D-Day invasion. After the war, Fahringer worked for studios in New York City and studied at the New York Art Students League, painting and illustrating for magazines and galleries. He later worked as the director of an art department for a federal government facility and retired to St. Augustine in 1975, where he had been a member of the St. Augustine Art Association for the past 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons: John Dolan, Lakewood, N.J.; and Frank Fahringer, Plantation, Fla.; a daughter, Patti Pinnell, Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers: George Fahringer, Gastonia, N.C.; and Dave Fahringer, Apollo; and a sis­ter, Jane Brewington, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. F. Stuart Straub, 76, of 1001 E. Front St., Berwick, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 17, 1997, at his home.
Born April 6, 1921, in Berwick, he was the son of the late Harry and Christine Fahringer Straub.

Straub was president of the First National Bank of Berwick for 20 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1986, after 50 years. Straub and his late father, Harry Straub, had a combined career of 83 years with the bank. He was a member of the bank's board of directors at the time of his death.

He started his banking career working summers during high school. After his discharge from the military, he worked as a teller. After many interim promotions, he was named president in 1968.

Straub received a plaque from the Pennsylvania Banker's Association commemorating 50 years in the industry.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Berwick, where he served as an elder and was on the church session board for many years. He served Scout Troop No. 10 in various offices for 30 years.

A veteran of World War 11, he was a bomber pilot in the European Theatre, completing more than 50 bombing missions over enemy lines in Italy, Southern Europe, Austria and the Balkans. Hp earned the Air Medal, with nine oak leaf clusters and four battle stars.

Straub then returned to the U.S. and was assigned to the 3rd Ferrying Group at Rumulus, Mich., ferrying single-engine fighters throughout the U.S. He was discharged Sept. 25, 1945, as a captain.

He was a trustee and past president of the Berwick YMCA, a past,, president of the Berwick and Hazleton Chambers of Commerce, a past president of the Hazleton Chapter of the Institute of Banking, a member of the North East Anthracite Banker's Association, a member of the Pennsylvania Banker's Association, past president of the Berwick Rotary Club, a life member of Knapp Lodge No. 462 F&AM, Berwick; the former Acacia Club, Berwick; the Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg; the Berwick Elks Lodge, the Board of Directors of the Berwick Industrial Development Association and the Berwick American Legion.

He had also been an active volunteer for the Berwick United Way campaigns.

He was a member of the Columbia-Montour Boy Scout Council, where he served on the Executive Board..His interest in Scouting dates back to the 1930s, when he became affiliated with Boy Scout, Troop No. 10 of the First Presbyterian Church, Berwick.

In July 1989, he was honored at the 1 1 the annual Columbia-Montour Boy Scout Council's Golf Tournament for more than 40 years of service.

He was awarded the highest honor of the Boy Scouts of America, the Silver Beaver, in 1978.
He was a 1938 graduate of Berwick High School and a 1942 graduate of Bloomsburg State Teachers College. He later graduated from the Wisconsin School of Banking.

An avid golfer, Straub was a member of the Berwick Golf Club and had served on the board of directors, Also an outdoors man, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He belonged to the Huntington Mills Fishing Lodge.

He was an avid skier and a member of the National Ski Patrol for more than 20 years.
He also took part in various bowling leagues over the years, including the Elks and YMCA leagues.
He was well known for growing roses and earned awards for them.

Surviving are his wife, the former Thurley J. Belford, with whom he would have celebrated a 5lst wedding anniversary on Nov. 9; two sons: Frank Stuart Straub Jr., Gilbertsville; and Earl H. Straub, Catawissa; three grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Stuart (Barbara) Hartman, Elysburg.

Services will be Thursday at 11 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 320 Market St., Berwick, with the Rev. Warren L. Baughman Jr., pastor emeritus of the Bower Memorial United Methodist Church, Berwick, and interim pastor of the First United Church of Christ, Berwick, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Market Street, Berwick.

Charles W. Piaft, 74, of Huntington Township, Luzerne County, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at his home. He had lived at his Huntington Township address for the past five years and previously lived in Elkton, Md., for 20 years.
